Facts about the Athos Peninsula
Mount Athos, often called the Holy Mountain, is a peninsula in northern Greece. It is not just a geological location, but a special and sacred place — a living testament to spirituality, endurance and the pursuit of eternal divine grace.
The “time reckoning” of Athos begins in the 4th century, when hermits and ascetics who wished to escape the hustle and bustle of the world and devote their lives to serving God — prayer and introspection— found refuge on the peninsula.
According to legend, the Virgin Mary visited Athos, blessing the island with her presence and granting it divine protection. Thanks to this extraordinary event, Athos’ status as a holy place was strengthened, attracting Christians from all over the Byzantine Empire and beyond.
In the early 10th century, an organized monastic community began to emerge on Athos, and with the support of the Byzantine emperor and the nobility, the first monasteries were built on the peninsula.
Today, Athos has 20 monasteries, each steeped in centuries of prayer and humble service. The island’s serene landscapes, surrounded by ancient forests, cliffs and the dazzling blue Aegean Sea, provide the eternal peace needed for contemplation. Accessible only to male pilgrims, the monastic communities follow centuries-old rules that govern their daily lives and spiritual service, reflecting the ancient traditions of Orthodox monastic life.
Due to its remarkable history, Mount Athos has remained a living sanctuary of faith, embodying the divine harmony between nature and spirituality.
